381 Main Street, Amesbury, MA, is a unique glass and wood single family house on the banks of the Merrimack River. The original historical house was demolished only after intensive negotiations with the Amesbury Historical Commission. The design restrictions required us to build the new house within onto the footprint of the original house and to maintain the general size, scale, materials and exterior window openings of the historical house. The facade that faced the Merrimack River could be glass to take full advantage of the views. A steel structural frame was buried inside of the traditional wood exterior to allow for dynamic cantilevered balconies and a full wall of mullionless tempered glass. A new boat dock was built beyond the traditional sea wall to complete the nautical view. The master bedroom occupies the entire third floor with a rooftop “Widow’s Walk” from the original historical house.
